x 11 inches with printing on one side only (but see next paragraph). About 600 words of promotional text announcing the "opera" singer's return to the stage after a few years of recovering from some unspecified illness. Quotes several newspapers & magazines praising a recent concert he did singing, among other things, Handel's LARGO, and an aria from PAGLIACCI. But the real praise (much more space devoted to same) is for his rendering of Black & African American Spirituals -
"by no means done in a 'minstrel' fashion."
Hamilton was actually from Birmingham Alabama and his full, real name was James Hamilton Cone. I suppose he took on the name James Hamilton as a "stage name." On the verso of this broadside is a ca. 1940-41 handwritten letter by the singer to his son, currently in ROTC training at either Auburn University of Birmingham Southern College (the son went to both).
A nice bit of memorabilia concerning a talented Ann Arbor Michigan and Birmingham Alabama opera singer. (He apparently spent time in both places). His wife was noted Birmingham artist Louise Cone and if you'll do a search of my store for the name "Logan" you'll turn up ANOTHER piece of memorabilia of a white Birmingham spiritual singer named William Logan and featuring Louise Cone's portrait of him on the cover :-}
Broadside has old folds (when folded to send as a letter - see below) and has a tiny hole about half the size of a pencil eraser between lines 6 & 7 of the next; still it's on decent quality paper and is NEAR VERT GOOD
