For the U.S., only 246 Carrera Targas were delivered in 1974 with a total of only 420 units over two years.
The ’74 was the only year to receive the “ducktail.” Besides the optional rear spoiler, the Carreras came standard with wider rear fender flares, matte black painted targa roll bar, painted headlight surrounds, wider light forged wheels (6x15 and 7x15), 5-speed manual transmission, 3-spoke sport steering wheel, vinyl model designation graphics, larger “S” brakes, and stiffer Bilstein suspension. With their Bosch CIS fuel injection and higher compression, they produced around 175hp, which was well suited to their sub 2,500lb weight.
This 911 was built in December of 1973 and sold new on February 27th, 1974 by Ripley Motor Corp Porsche + Audi in Ithaca, New York. Although the Carreras came with more options as standard, this one was equipped with the following additional items from the factory:
Lime Green Paint
California Equipment
Bumpers w/Impact Absorbers (F&R)
Targa – Folding Top
Bilstein Shocks (instead of Boge)
Engine Compartment Light
Tinted Glass All Around
Pirelli Tires.
The MSRP would’ve been an estimated ,000 at the time.
Most likely this 911 was slated to be sold in California, hence the “California Equipment” on COA. However, this color was rare and was probably traded or rerouted to the original selling dealership in New York. The first owner kept the car for at least 6-years/42k miles based on the stamps/entries into the original maintenance booklet (back part of original owner’s manual). It appears it had routine services at either the Porsche dealer or a Porsche independent shop at least annually. Although not much is known about this Carreras early history, it did come back to California in the early 1980s and spent the next 20+ years here. The original engine and transmission had failed early in its life and was replaced with a correct 1974 Carrera engine that is 953 numbers off the original and a transmission from a 1976 911. Also, while in California, it had been repainted white sometime in the late 1980s/early 1990s.
An enthusiast and U.S. military officer from Annapolis, Maryland purchased this Carrera in July of 2003 from a Southern California owner while he was working for a defense contractor in San Diego. Later that year, he towed the car back to his home in Maryland. He kept the car for the next 4-years and used it as his daily driver. He always had the idea of doing a restoration on the car, but in 2007, the contractor he worked for was relocating him to Europe for at least 3-years. He felt that it would be a waste to restore the car and have it just sit, so he decided to sell it.
For the next 3-years, there’s no information. However, after chatting with the previous sales manager at TruSpeed, it ended up with a collector in California who they believe was the one who did the cosmetic restoration and repainted it back to its original Lime Green. The paintwork was done properly in the correct factory shade. There are no signs it was a prior color and the paint in the trunk and engine compartment are original as it left the factory. That owner was friends with the owner of TruSpeed and gave it to them in 2010 to sell on consignment.
TruSpeed sold the car on May 6th, 2010 with 78,348 miles to the next owner in Charlotte, North Carolina. This NC enthusiast kept the car for 6-years and added another 6k-miles. During that time, this owner invested over k on mechanical services including an engine rebuild. Most of the routine service was performed by the 911 Shop in Charlotte. However, the engine rebuild was done by Zuffenhaus Eurowerks in Monroe, North Carolina. Highlights of work done by this owner include:
Post-purchase inspection/service (8/10 @ 78,536 miles)
Oil service
Oil pressure switch
Oil level sender gasket
Replace all CV boots
Replace front bearings
Engine rebuild due to low oil pressure (9/10 @ 78,536)
Disassemble engine
Porsche piston and cylinder set (Mahle)
Main bearing set
Porsche engine case studs
Machine engine case
Deck base gasket surface
Line hone mains
Oil bypass modification
Machine to clear 3.2L oil pump
Timesert head studs
Resize connecting rods
Reseal engine
Replace alternator
Oil pump
Wevo engine mounts
Ignition wires and new coil
Oil pressure sender
Updated oil fed Carrera chain tensioners
Total engine build cost: ,680
Clutch and accelerator cables (8/12)
Oil thermostat (10/12)
Bosch CD ignition box and harness (3/13)
Engine and transmission mounts (8/14)
New alternator and ignition switch assembly (5/15)
This owner sold the 911 in May of 2016 with 84,500 miles to a Porsche collector in Littleton, Colorado who then turned around and sold it 5 months later with 200 more miles to an air-cooled enthusiast in Southern California. This SoCal owner owns a high end paint and body shop. He kept the car for 2-years, but only added a few hundred more miles. However, with his automotive industry connections, he spent over k further enhancing this Carrera. Highlights of work performed during this owner’s care include:
Replaced front suspension/spare tire pan
Refinished Fuchs wheels in proper finish
Pirelli P6000 tires (7/17)
Restored Fuchs to proper finish.
Taillight and front turn signal lenses
Repair oil leaks at Rusnak Porsche (8/18 @ 84,950 miles)
930 lower valve covers with gaskets
Oil level gauge, oil dipstick, and oil level gasket
Lastly, he had the local Porsche dealer perform a leak-down and compression test. The results were excellent:
1) 170/5% 2) 170/10% 3) 175/10% 4) 165/10% 5) 170/8% 6) 170/12%
This SoCal owner sold this Targa to the current Texas owner in January of 2019 with just shy of 85,000 miles. It was shipped to Mayo Performance of Dallas, Texas to get it ready for the upcoming Texas Hill Country Rallye (air-cooled only Porsche driving tour) coming up in March of that year. Mayo performed a brake fluid flush, 4-wheel alignment and inspection. They commented on the service receipt, “Test drove vehicle. Everything seems sorted for Hill Country event.” This owner has added 2k-miles over the next couple years. He always kept the car in a climate controlled garage and drove it on fair weather days.
The exterior of this 911 Carrera looks fantastic. It’s clear that it has been well cared for over the years. The paint is over a decade old and is showing minimal signs of wear and minor flaws, which is to be expected. It’s obvious the paint work was a very good quality job, but it’s not perfect. The trim, rubber, and deco bits are all in very good shape. The glass is also in good shape with original factory stampings on the side and rear glass. The windshield was replaced most likely when repainted with a good quality glass that has no major chips, cracks, or scratches. The freshly restored Fuchs have no curb rash and are wearing near full tread Pirelli tires in the correct factory sizes. They are dated 2017 with no signs of age. The rear brake pads have over half-life and the fronts are more than 75% life remaining. All the exterior lights work properly. The targa top was also restored and fits nicely with no wear signs.
The interior is equally nice and most likely refreshed at the same time as the exterior (10+ years ago). The seats have been refurbished in black and the backs are possibly from a 1975 or later model. The only visual difference is the shape of the tilt knob. The rear seats look great and naturally unused. The headliner of the targa top has no sagging.
