Dinosaur Dig Field Camp MontanaLittle Snowy Mountains Dinosaur Project 2018
July 29 - August 3, 2018.
Since 1993, the
Judith River Dinosaur Institute
has been dedicated to the preservation and education of Montana's rich dinosaur history through our field programs. Our six-day long dig programs are tailored with this mission in mind. If you are serious about any aspect of natural history and love the outdoors, you'll find this a rich learning experience. Our programs appeal to a wide audience: students, professionals and people from all walks of life and from around the globe.
What Are We Digging?
Currently, our dig site is a Jurassic graveyard with layer upon layer of dinosaur bone!
For the last four years the site has produced the remains of seven stegosaurs, from juvenile to adult.
These 150 million year old specimens could be a new species.
W
e will continue to excavate
very
large sauropod above
in a new
quarry so we’ll expose this new section in the summer of 2017 as well.
Each specimen we excavate has scientific value, so our digs are not for the casual vacationer. Young and old alike will experience the excitement of discovery while learning real world paleontology. Even if you've never had any class room or field experience, you can still participate. We just ask you come willing to learn and receive instruction. Everyone helps in the quarry, with camp setup, and the kitchen.
All fossils collected are for scientific research a
nd
the property of the Judith River Dinosaur Institute
.
Note to Parents
: If you have a child who wants to go into this field, we have hosted many middle and high school kids and this program has produced over a dozen students who are now involved in paleontological careers.
It is not necessary for a parent or guardian to attend. We’ve handled minors for years and have parent references upon request.
However,
minimum age for kids is 1
2
.
Sorry, we cannot make an exception no matter how mature the child due to insurance liability requirements.
Camp Life
The camp is located about 200 yards from the quarry and is a beautiful meadow/pasture full of grass and wildflowers.
The quarry is a short hike to a hillside.
After a hot day, a
refreshing
shower and a great meal is welcome to everyone.
Music is often a part of the evening agenda around the campfire along with plenty of education from every dinosaur topic you can think of.
Just because we’ve done this for 30 years, doesn’t mean we have to rough it too much!
