This is simply a killer Mastodon fossil. It is a very large skull section with giant tooth from the extinct American Mastadon, Mammut americanum. This type of animal crossed the land bridge from North America to Russia and made it as far as Eastern Europe. The Mastodon lived beyond the end of the Ice Age and was hunted by early Man until about 10,000 years ago. M. americanum was a very large and interesting Ice Age elephant-like mammal, similar to the Woolly Mammoth.
This awesome specimen is a large dentary part of a Mastodon skull with fabulous tooth intact. The giant tooth (
about seven inches long!
) is tightly rooted and displays beautifully in the jaw. The striking tooth has excellent detail preserved - the thick enamel has its natural reticulation intact.
But probably the coolest feature of this tooth is its beautiful natural orangish-green(!) coloration - only a handful of Mammoth teeth ever found has this unique coloration preserved!
The monster tooth is well-displayed in the huge section of skull - very, very impressive! The bone quality is also just spectacular - thick, heavy, and not crumbly in any way. Overall, this is a textbook find, a top quality Mastodon upper jaw with tooth still embedded - a super collectible and extremely displayable vertebrate fossil. (The fossil displays perfectly - it sits upright on a table or shelf with no stand needed!)
