    Description

Federation of McGuffey Societies Letterhead and Statue Image from Oxford, OH.
Letter written on May 16, 1947 by William Smith, Secretary Treasurer of the Society in Oxford at that time.  Smith addresses this letter to an individual interested in pronouncing Spelling Bee words at the McGuffey sponsored spelling bee.  He is looking for an "old time pronouncer".
The letterhead is in great condition. At the top is the title of the society along with the Secretary of the group (Minnich), the President (Newlin), and the author of this letter.  The black and white image on the letterhead is of the memorial statue located near McGuffey Hall on Miami University's campus in Oxford, OH depicting William Holmes McGuffey.  The paper measures about 8.5 inches by about 11 inches.
    The additional vintage image of
3 children reading included in this sale is a print of the sculpture at located at the base of the memorial.  It is of a boy and two girls reading together and, on the memorial, it is entitled, "The First Lesson of the First McGuffey First Reader". This small print is of card stock material and does have some discoloration.  It m
easures about 5 1/2 inches by about 4 inches.
See photos for details for both items.
