    Description

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany this order.
Here is a small piece of Jurassic fossil dinosaur bone, from the world-famous Bone Cabin Quarry in Wyoming. It lived about 150 million years ago, in what today is called the Morrison Formation.
It is a small piece of a Stegosaurus bone, measuring about 1.4 inches at the longest length.  We don't know exactly what bone this was a part of, but it came from a group of Stegosaurus bones that were together, including a spike, so we do know the species. Excavated in September 2020.
No paint or restoration has been applied.
Stegosaurus is one of the most popular dinosaurs in the world. It was a plant eater that could grow up to 30 feet in length.  It is immediately recognized by the 2 columns of large plates on its back which stood up vertically, and 4 large spikes on its tail. The spikes probably made a decent defense against predators.  It probably did not outwit its enemies, as its brain (yes, it had just one brain) was about the size of a walnut.
As fascinating as the Stegosaurus was and is, that is only part of the story here. The Bone Cabin Quarry got its name because of its proximity to the famed Bone Cabin. We are going to quote Wikipedia here (which hopefully will be okay since we donate to them annually):
"Bone Cabin Quarry is a dinosaur quarry that lies approximately fifty-five miles northwest of Laramie, Wyoming near historic Como Bluff. During the summer of 1897 Walter Granger, a paleontologist from the American Museum of Natural History, came upon a hillside littered with Jurassic period dinosaur bone fragments. Nearby was a sheepherder's cabin built entirely out of fossil bones, hence the name "Bone Cabin Quarry."
After Granger's discovery in late August 1897, the quarry was kept secret until the summer of 1898, when the manpower could be amassed to undertake a full-scale excavation. Bone Cabin Quarry was excavated from 1898 until 1905, when the productivity of specimens thinned. Some of the dinosaurs found at the Bone Cabin Quarry include Stegosaurus, Allosaurus and Apatosaurus."
Very tiny bits may come off in shipping, but not enough to affect the beauty of the piece. We wrap it fully and very carefully. If you are not good with this, please do not order.
We are happy to enclose a COA (Certificate of Authenticity).  Some words of caution about COA’s: Do not let them become a substitute for learning about the specimens. We have been working with fossils and minerals for many years, and we have seen hundreds of very nice-looking COA’s, some that are wrong, mis-describing a specimen. In addition, the person selling the item is often the one who writes the COA (potential conflict of interest). Finally, a COA without a photo of the exact item described, as part of that COA, is worthless, as it can later be placed next to any other fossil or mineral.  We suggest that instead of relying on a COA, that people read and study the subject.
