    Irene Castle (born Irene Foote) and her husband Vernon Castle (born William Vernon Blyth)
    were a husband-and-wife team of ballroom dancers who appeared on Broadway and silent films
    in the early 20th century. They reached the peak of  their popularity in Irvin Berlin's Broadway
    show

    (1914). Vernon died in a plane crash in 1918. In 1938 their life was
    dramatized in

    , starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
